First and formost get the car on stands as high as possible. Use 4 jackstands and lift the whole car. The higher the better. But dont forget to do any nessisary under hood work before raising car. The under hood work is much easier with the car on the ground. _______

Most Important thing!!Shifter and linkage out first and in last. Everything else is easy and straightforward. Leaving the shifter even partly installed will make removing the trans difficult if not impossible. Install it before installing the transmission and you will use up every four letter word you know trying to put it back in. Another tip - Once you get the tranny input shaft well throuh the clutch disk and can start the bolts from the tranny to the bellhousing, pushing in the clutch will make it easier line up the pilot bushing with the input shaft while pulling the tranny to the bellhousing. _______

Get yourself a LONG extension, as long as the transmission is would be a good minimum, and a swivel socket for the transmission to block bolts. You'll be glad you did! _______

On the top bolts make sure you use a 6pt wrench, the longest you got, Or I use my jack handle as an extention. It seems like there is another tip for the top bolts but I can't think of it right now. Good Luck, Tom M

And if I remember correctly you have a welded in crossmember and you will have to roll the transmission upside down to get it to to clear everything to come out. Am I right guys? it's been a while since I had a factory four speed car. JIM _______

I think you just rotate it 90 degrees, with the shift shafts pointing down as I remember it.

You need a long extension for the top bolts...even the lower ones are easier with an extension. Also, don't try to unbolt the bell housing until the tranny is out, cause you can't remove them as a unit...the tranny must be unbolted from the bell housing first and removed. If you have a welded crossmember then you may want to unbolt the bell housing too, or the tranny may get wedged between the floor and the top of the bell housing tunnel. Be sure to inspect the pressure plate and flywheel surfaces for pits and gouges...you can get them resurfaced for like $50 for both pieces at brake and clutch shops. Be sure they aren't dirty or greasy (don't touch them with your bare hands even), if they get dirty use carb cleaner to scrub them clean, and rinse with water and air dry in the sun (don't use a towel). Check the pilot bearing, make sure it's got a little grease smear in back of it, also apply a light amount of grease to the input shaft where the throw out bearing will be riding (don't get any on the ribbing where the clutch disk rides. Also, pilot bearings are only $5, but are a pain to replace, while throw-out bearings are only $15 and easy to replace; so, I always replace my throw-out bearings, but only replace the pilot bearing if I notice wear, or if it was dry at the time of inspection. _______

I was reading the updates on this post, has anyone had any luck using a socket on the top housing bolts? I always used an end wrench, I think some of thoose gear wrenches might work though.

This is an installation tip not a removal tip. Assuming you are going to put it back in. Get two 3"-5" bolts (the same size as you removed) and cut the heads off. Round the ends with a file or lathe. When you get ready to replace the trans thread these into the two bottom holes of the bellhousing. Slide the trans onto these two bolts; it makes alignment much easier. Start a bolt in one of the top holes and then remove them. All of this assumes your setup has a seperate trans and bellhousing.
