pop out rear window conversion for
77 |

Hello;
I would like my 77 coupe to have the pop out window that the
68-72(73?) cars have. Do they have a conversion kit? or can I just
buy the parts for a '70 vette rear window, that is availible in the
corvetteforum resteration place? Also, my 77 has a rear defogger, is
there something I can do to "rig" this so it will still work, but I
will be able to take my window out w/o leaving the wires connected?
I finally have my 77 mechanically sound, and Im driving it every
chance I get, the first time I drove it was last friday, it has been
sitting 2 years prior to that. This weekend its going to come off
the road again for about 3-5 months while I paint it, and do
cosmetic work. Should i do it now? where I live, the nicest part of
the year is probably March-May, then it gets blistering hot until
September. Should I wait until early October to take it off the road
so I can enjoy it while the weather is nice, or should i get a jump
on it so I can enjoy it next year?
Thanks, Daniel

There's no kit Get a window frame before doing
anything else ( thats the hard part ) and I don't think you can buy
new ones...
Then you can get latches etc from your favorite Corvette vendor.
Oh BTW, the real cars also have a storage try that sits under the
deck. Also a hard to come by part
Oh drive it now if the weather is nice! Call it an extended
test drive _______

you should be able to buy all the parts used from
J&D Corvette in Bellflower Ca. 800-838-8353, the window runs
about $50-75, the latches are $30-60 ea. and are different form
year to year. youll also need weatherstripping i'm not sure on the
price. _______

Yep, the window frame and the storage tray are the
tough ones. Go to big swap meets and you may be able to find them. I
got mine two years ago at the Daytona Turkey Rod Run for $185 for
both of them in average condition. The clasps, hinges, and weather
strip are available through normal Corvette vendors.
It will actually seal better than the straight window, because
the weather strip absorbs the flex of the body a bit. Plus, it's
easier to replace the weather strip than seal the straight window.
I lost the electric defroster on mine, but we found an
electrically heated fan from NAPA that is small and can be mounted
on the side to defrost the window quickly.

thanks to all those who replied; I will probably be
trying this conversion sometime durring my painting/clean up.
apparently getting a car mechanically sound makes it really dirty(I
guess thats my fault test driving it all greasy, and getting my
greasy palms all over the fenders). But its needs paint anyway, a
year ago I droped $2,500 to have it painted, took it from the booth
to the mechanics to have them redo the break system...all they
replaced was the booster and one rubber line, and it ran me
$298...after a month the paint started to bubble...so far no break
problems, but 300 is A LOT...I swore no one other then myself would
ever do ANY work on my car, unless it was a friend, and I was there
supervising...so when it comes time to paint, I'll be doing it. Im
going to keep good photo's and a writeup on my progress to post on a
website for the people at the forum...should they decide to paint
theirs themselves, and they want yet another web site to read(I know
a lot of guys here have them already, I have read them all abut 5
times a peice)
Thanks again, I will be using this board for many more tech
questions later on I am sure..you guys are great.
